PRASA unveils the refurbished Doornfontein Station

From a PRASA media release.

Unveiling of the Doornfontein Station

The Doornfontein Station is the first in a number of Passenger Rail Station Upgrades to be undertaken by the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA).

The station upgrade, managed by Intersite, the Property Management Subsidiary of PRASA, boasts modern facilities such as shelter from inclement weather, more seating, access for Special Needs Passengers, Natural Light and Good Ventilation, Good Signage, CCTV Cameras, a lengthened and resurfaced platform as well as an upper deck for retail and commercial activities.

The Doornfontein station forms part of PRASA’s Multi Million Rand National Station Upgrade Programme, which refurbishes the station network around the country leading to the 2010 FIFA World Cup and beyond.

Other Stations undergoing major upgrades are Nasrec, Cape Town, Langa, Kwa-Mashu and Orlando. PRASA is also building new train stations, such as Moses Mabhida (Durban) Windermere (Cape Town) and Rhodesfield (Johannesburg); these are due to be completed in the first quarter of 2010.

Says PRASA CEO, Tshepo Lucky Montana “The unveiling of Doornfontein station is an important milestone in our Massive Capital Programme leading to 2010. Our Capital Programme is modernising our Infrastructure and increasing our capacity to meet the expectations of the travelling public and the thousands of Football loving fans expected to attend the Confederations Cup and the 2010 FIFA World Cup”.

PRASA, the parent company of Metrorail, is putting into action an aggressive five-year investment plan to improve the reliability and comfort of its Rolling Stock, Technology and other Infrastructure such as the Railway Tracks. Metrorail passengers are already experiencing the benefits of the investment Programme, whether it's in the comfort of a refurbished coach, a beautiful and modern train station or the presence of Security and Railway Police. Passengers are already benefiting from over 36 months of concerted infrastructure investment work. PRASA is ready for the Confederations Cup and the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

  1. Craig. Any idea where Winderemere station is going to be. The Winderemere control building is on the N1 between Acacia Park and Kentemade stations with no people movement any where near there.
